Alegebra Problem:

Find the slope of the line 6x - 2y = 3
First: solve for x
 6x -2y = 3 <-- Original Alegbra Equation:
-6x                   -6x    <-- you subtract 6x from both sides
 6x -6x - 2y = 3 -6x <-- this is what -6x looks like on both sides
     0    -2y  = 3 - 6x <-- reduce the left hand side of the equations
           -2y  = 3 -6x <-- remove the 0 from the left hand side
 -2y / -2  = (3 - 6x)/ -2 <-- divide both sides by -2
           y = -3/2 - 6x/-2 <-- reduce the left and righ sides
              y = -1.5 + 3x
              y = 3x - 1.5 <-- Equation solved for y = Slope of the Line
lets plot x & y

Steps for solving x & y
  6x -2y      = 3 <-- Original Alegbra Equation:
       +2y = +2y            <-- you add 2y to both sides
                           6x - 2y + -2y = 3 + 2y <-- this is what you get when you'r playing around the gas grill  add +2y to both sides.
  6x   -    0      = 3 + 2Y <-- reduce the left hand side of the equations
  6x                = 3  - 2y <-- remove the 0 from the left hand side
6x / 6             = 3 - 2y / 6 <-- divide both sides by 6
         x = 3/6 - 2y/6 <-- reduce the left and righ sides
         x =  1/2  -1/3y <-- reduce further
         x = .5 - 1/3y <-- Equation solved for y = Slope of the Line

Welcome to beginning Algebra - it is one of my favorite math classes.

I use algebra every day - I can't imagine life without it.  However slopes are hard to envision sometimes.

You use them in building roofs, on and off ramps from highways and for garden terraces, are a few of the many applications.

Slope of a Line, Rate of change

Usually it starts out with an equation like 5x + 3y = 7

Then you solve for x:  5x = 7 - 3y,

then x = (7-3y)/5

Then you start to enter numbers in for y:

When y = 0 then x =  7/5 =  1 2/5 = 1.4

When y = 1 then x =  4/5 =  .8

When y = 2 then x =  1/5 =  .2

When y = 3 then x = -2/5 = -.4

As you plot these out - you see a line form. If you wanted to know what the slope of that line was... say you were building a wheelchair ramp and you wanted it to be up to code - you need to check the slope of the ramp.

Slope = Change in Y / Change in X

for our example the change in y = 0 - 3 = -3

for our example the change in x = 1 2/5 - (- 2/5) = 1 4/5

Slope = -3/1 4/5 = -3/1.8 = -1.6666 or -1 2/3

Keep asking questions - it will come back to you!!
